Participating in an after school activity can be advantageous for your kids (and is definitely worth the money!). Instead of allowing your kids to spend their after school hours parked in front of the television, why not send them to a class where they can learn new skills that will benefit them in the long run?

Children who attend after school classes are known to be more physically fit, proactive and have higher self confidence when it comes to dealing other people. Might we suggest:

1. Martial Art Classes (Capoeira)

Being one of the lesser known forms of Martial arts in Malaysia, Capoeira is slowly gaining attention for its interesting combination of martial arts, music and dance. Capoeira not only teaches self defence but it also helps with social and personal growth because you will join a group of people from all walks of life who will give you insights on cultural differences that you might have never had exposure to before. This will also increase your level of confidence when meeting and interacting with other people.

Casa De Capoeira, a leading capoeira training academy in Malaysia holds classes for kids every Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday at their centre. The academy accepts kids from 3 years old up to 13 years old. Fees starts from RM125 for 4 sessions per month.

2. Cooking Classes

Kids are curious little beings. How many times do you find yourself preventing your kids from coming into the kitchen and wrecking havoc on the counter? Put that curiosity to good use by enrolling them in a cooking class specially for kids instead. Conveniently situated in Bangsar, The Cooking House is a great place for your kids to learn about the basics of culinary such as egg boiling, vegetable slicing and how to handle kitchen appliances.

You can even take classes together with the kids as a family. You'll find no problem in allowing the kids into the kitchen. They might even surprise you with their hidden culinary abilities! Registration fee starts from RM30 depending on classes and sessions.

3. Dance Classes

Getting kids to boogie can actually improve their overall health because of the physical movements that are involved. If your child is not so fond of doing sports outdoor, you might want to consider enrolling them in a dance class.

Apart from the overall improvement in health, kids will also appreciate having a creative outlet so they can freely express themselves in dance form. Based in Setapak, Dancepot is a great alternative for parents who are looking out to send their kids to dance classes. They offer genres ranging from ballet and jazz to hip-hop and contemporary.

You can even take classes together with your child for a fun parent-child bonding session! Trial classes are provided for first timers at no cost at all. Fee starts from RM80 per month depending on dance genre.

4. Art Classes

Tots who are more introverted might appreciate spending their time making art instead of dancing to the beat. Exposing your kids to visual arts is perhaps one of the best decisions you could make.

Kids thrive on creativity and activities that involve using their imagination so providing them with an outlet to express themselves is definitely a step in the right direction. Encouraging them to be visually creative will also trigger their creativity academically whereby they will be more creative in essay writing and problem solving in school.

Reputed as one of the best art studios in Kuala Lumpur, The Studio @ KL is a good choice if you're looking out to give your child some exposure to creating visual art. They even have classes for kids aged 2-5 years old. You can also claim a complimentary trial class before committing.

Sweating is one of the main reasons some kids steer clear of sports. Interested in doing sports but not so sure about sweating it out? Try swimming for a change. Besides helping with movement and improving coordination, swimming is also about water safety.

Kids should be equipped with basic swimming skills so they will feel confident to react should anything happen in real life water situations. Their programme includes beginners basic, competitive swimming, stroke correction and also a special programme for ladies and muslimah. You can opt to use their swimming pools or whichever pool you please. Fees start from RM300 onward.
