Merdeka Weekend with the Family

The Merdeka weekend this year is guaranteed to be a fun period with a long weekend that extends to Monday (1st September 2014). With the fanfare of parades & carnivals, the long weekend could serve to be a great time for the family to enjoy some well deserved relaxation before the start of the school term for many children.

Amid the celebration, Merdeka serves to be sobering reminder to all of us to cherish & appreciate being a part of a free & independent country.

Yayasan Sime Darby International Youth Cricket Carnival

With professional cricket teams from Malaysia, Singapore & India playing in some 50 matches at 4 venues of the Royal Selangor Club, the carnival is one to attend for every die-hard cricket fan.

Beyond the glamour of bat & wicket, the carnival also guarantees fun for the whole family with a variety bazaar, games & competitions along with what seems to be a very fun bouncy castle!

The National Day Parade

Some 14,220 participants from more than 23 government & uniformed agencies will parade through Dataran Merdeka alongside some 150 police & military vehicles.

The parade this year will also include a large zeppelin which will bear the iconic photograph of the first Prime Minister of Malaysia, Tunku Abdul Rahman raising his hand & crying out “Merdeka”.

The zeppelin will be accompanied by four drones which will circulate around Dataran Merdeka with cameras to capture the celebrations on the ground which will be televised straight back to Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM) channels.

With the theme of “Malaysia, here where love begins”, the National Day celebration which is traditionally held at Dataran Merdeka will observe a much more somber affair in lieu with the tragedies of MH 17 & MH 370 this year.

A road trip to Melaka

The city of Melaka is home to some of the historic icons of Malaysia’s past & is home to gastronomic delights that would surely make a family road trip down south memorable.

The Malaysian Army Museum

The Royal Air Force Museum

The KL Vintage Festival

Beyond bargaining for some hard to find vintage pieces and knick-knacks, the festival will also include music performances and screening of old Malay films.

Petronas Gallery “MY Story” Exhibition

Celebrating Merdeka, Petronas Gallery will showcase an exhibition entitled “MY Story” which documents a timeline of Malaysia from the past to present.
