Never heard of the Advanced Placement (AP)? Here's what it is!

Advanced Placement (AP) is a program in the United States and Canada created by the College Board which offers college-level curricula and examinations to high school students. Advanced Placement (AP) courses offer first year university material to high school students. It was created through a partnership between top American universities (Harvard, Princeton etc) and high schools as a way to offer enrichment to top students.

Success in AP courses demonstrates to universities that a student is already a capable university student and is viewed highly favorably for admissions. Students can count their AP coursework towards university requirements usually with an exam score of 3 or higher out of 5.

AP tests are scored on a 1 to 5 scale as follows:

  • 5 – Extremely well qualified
  • 4 – Well qualified
  • 3 – Qualified
  • 2 – Possibly qualified
  • 1 – No recommendation

How does Advanced Placement (AP) compare to International Baccalaureate (IB)?

While AP was created to provide enrichment to top achieving students, its high academic standards have made it recognizable around the world. In contrast, the IB program was created to give international mobile families a consistent and recognizable curriculum. The IB and AP both promote academic excellence and have worldwide recognition. Many college recruiters report that they are most interested that students have challenged themselves with their course load and taken the most challenging courses available to them. The Advanced Placement’s advantages are choice and American recognition. Also if  your child will be furthering his or her tertiary education in the US then, the AP is the way to go as most American universities give a preference to the AP.

Application for admissions to OISKL opens February 6th! Here's how to apply:
