Highly urbanised and industrialised, Penang is one of the most developed and economically important states in Malaysia. With a population reaching 2 million, the state of Penang has multiple education options such as Chinese Independent Schools.

Let's take a look at Penang's Chinese Independent schools which are a popular choice among Penangites.

1. Chung Ling Private High School

CURRICULUM: UEC & IGCSEFEE:IGCSE – RM 6,500UEC – RM 3,960

Established in 1961 in Georgetown, the school has roots with the Chung Ling High School which began in 1919 before adopting the Chinese Medium and the UEC curriculum. It currently shares the heritage with two other Chung Ling schools which follow the national Curriculum, one in Georgetown and the other in Butterworth.

The school was awarded the Cluster Schools Excellence Award by the Ministry of Education (MOE), Malaysian 2013 alongside it’s two “sister schools” in Penang.

The school is unique as it offers not only the UEC curriculum but also the IGCSE or “O” levels curriculum to students at the school. Chung Ling Private School also offers limited boarding facilities mostly for foreign students who are studying at the school.

2. Han Chiang High School

Founded in 1950 upon a 33 acre campus, Han Chiang High School at Jalan Scotland has a student population of over 1,000 students with a mix of foreign and local students studying.

The school offers the UEC curriculum alongside the National Curriculum that stops at Form 3 (Penilaian Tahap 3). The UEC curriculum at the school is comprehensive and is supported by a wide array of in campus facilities that include a car repair center and beauty salon for students taking the Senior Vocational stream of the UEC curriculum.

The school was accredited in 2009 by the Ministry of Education (MOE), Malaysia's 5-star Institute under the Private Education Quality Standards Exam (SKIPS).

3. Jit Sin Independent High School

CURRICULUM:UEC & NATIONAL CURRICULUMFEE:RM 2,640 – RM 3,630 per year

Accredited by the Ministry of Education (MOE), Malaysia in 2013 as a 5-star institute under the Private Education Quality Standards Exam (SKIPS), Jit Sin Independent High School was founded in 1918 by the Chinese Community in Penang.

Offering the UEC and National Curriculum of Malaysia, the school is located in Bukit Mertajam and provides boarding facilities to some 100 students studying in the school.

4. Penang Chinese Girls' Private High School

CURRICULUM: UEC & NATIONAL CURRICULUMFEE:RM 2,360 – RM 3,170 per year

Founded in 1919, the school is built upon the virtues of decorum, honesty, diligence and simplicity. With some 2,000 students currently enrolled at the Penang Chinese Girl Private High School, the school offers a comprehensive co-curriculum that includes sport and the arts.

Located in Jalan Gottlieb, Georgetown, the school offers both the UEC and National Curriculum, the girls only school includes a significant number of foreign students from Korea, Thailand, Indonesia and Taiwan.

5. Phor Tay Private High School

CURRICULUM: UEC CURRICULUMFEE:RM 4,200 per year

Originally a school for orphans built in 1930, Phor Tay Private High School traces its roots back to Buddhist teaching that still influence the school to this day.

Incorporating Cambridge ESOL into the UEC curriculum at the school, Phor Tay Private High School is located in Jalan Bagan Jermal and has significant ties with tertiary education institutes in Taiwan.
