The other four institutions that made it to the top 300 are Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Uni­ver­siti Utara Malaysia (UUM) and Universiti Teknologi Mara.

Seven Malaysian universities made it to the list, up from four last year.The Times Higher Education BRICS & Emerging Economies University Rankings 2017 includes only institutions in countries classified as “advanced emerging”, “secondary emerging” or “frontier” including the BRICS nations of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.China once again dominates the list of the best universities in the BRICS and emerging economies. Overall, India has 19 universities in the top 200, up from 16 last year.Phil Baty, editor of the Times Higher Education Rankings commented that India was making "great strides" and could soon overtake Taiwan as the second most represented country in the top 200 of the table, behind China.The BRICS & Emerging Economics University Rankings use the same 13 rigorous and demanding performance indicators as the overall World University Rankings to determine which institutions demonstrate high standards of performance across teaching, research, international outlook and knowledge transfer in comparison to other leading research universities across emerging economy countries.
