3As and 3Bs sufficient for entry into residential schools

Based on the new format of the UPSR examinations, the Education Ministry has changed the entry requirement and criteria to the country's full residential schools for the academic year 2017. According to news reports, the minimum academic requirement to apply for a spot is now 3As and 3Bs. However, a good academic result is not the only criteria taken into consideration, the student's involvement in sports and co-curricular activities is also important.There are 9,000 places open for Form One in 69 residential schools in 2017.The ministry has assured a fair selection process based on the entire student's achievement profile. Education General-Director Tan Sri Dr Khair Mohammad Yusof said that the ministry has received 60,000 online applications from students who were keen to enter full residential school's next year.In a separate statement, MARA said that it would also review entrance criteria for entry to Form One in Mara Junior Science College (MRSM) for the 2017 school year based on the 2016 UPSR results. The current entry requirement to MRSM is 6As in UPSR.There are 7,500 Form One places in MRSM for next year.It said applications would reopen for three days from Nov 18 to 20 to enable new applications as well as to update those who have already applied at www.mara.gov.my.
