The Malaysian Ministry of Education is studying the possibility of requiring children aged six years for mandatory pre-school education to prepare them for primary school.

Deputy Director of the Education Department Datuk Ahmad Tajuddin said the study was consistent with efforts to ensure that the education in Malaysia will be on par with other developed countries."At the moment, we can not make it mandatory yet due to several constraints including lack of infrastructure and skilled instructors," he said.Ahmad Tajuddin said that this year, about 84 percent of children entering preschool are six year olds and the percentage is expected to increase to 90 percent within three years.Malaysia is also a bit behind compared to developed countries such as Finland wheret 99 per cent of their children go to kidnergarten before entering primary school.
