Selected schools to offer Thai language classes

According to Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, Thai language classes will soon be taught in selected schools. Such classes will be available in states like Kelantan, Kedah and Perlis, where there are big population of Malaysian Thais. Muhyiddin, who is also the Education Minister, said that the ministry will identify the schools that will provide Thai language classes and provide them with adequate teachers for the subject.

The language was taught in schools from 1956 to 1980s. There are 66 Thai schools nationwide and 31 of them are in Perlis and Kedah, revealed Senator Datuk Boon Som Inong, the Thai community representative in the Dewan Negara. A total of RM620,000 allocation will be given to 31 Thai schools in Perlis and Kedah. The fund is part of a RM1.2million package, which also includes the provision of RM130,000 to Thai clubs and associations throughout Malaysia as well as RM200,000 for a futsal court in Kampung Baru Naka, announced Muhyiddin.
