Unleashing the Creativity of Young Minds:A 15 year old student in Fairview International School Kuala Lumpur has just invented an outstanding model of a new brake system for vehicles as part of his Middle Years Programme (MYP) Learning journey.A Personal Project reflecting on this 5-year learning journey in the MYP culminates in creating or developing one area that impacted the students the most.Fairview IB ProjectThe Personal Project is a compulsory component of the Middle Years Programme. In the final year of the Middle Years, which is Grade 11 in Fairview, all students reflect on their learning journey over the last 5 years and decide on what was that one single thing that touched them the most. This translates into a project in which they have to explain the concept that relates to the Global Context, work out the process and finally come out with a meaningful product. In the process, they gain referencing, research, critical and analytical, thinking, time management, self-management skills among a host of other soft skills glaringly necessary in the world today.Fairview IB Project 2True to the word 'personal' the students have to work on this independently in their own time to demonstrate their learning over the years. They have to explore concepts within the 6 Global Contexts given by IB, gain conceptual understanding and with the Approaches to Learning skills (ATLs) use the knowledge acquired in the various subject disciplines to arrive at the ‘One’ thing that they want to work on. And 6 months is all they have and in their own time, a remarkable achievement for a 15 year old balancing this with the on screen examinations, e-portfolios and Cambridge IGCSE O level Examinations!Fairview IB Project 4An exhibition was held to showcase and celebrate students’ achievement. Students will do a presentation with regards to their project and share their learning experience while working on this project. Among other projects that will be showcased by the students are digital booklets featuring brain and psychology, health magazine and creative series of images showing impact of the social media. These students have gained so much in maturity in thought and action that they transcend seamlessly into Pre-University and tertiary education without a hitch. The IB Diploma is an easy track for these students have the knowledge and are equipped with the skills needed. It is not just another piece of work. Students take action on what they have achieved. A student chose to work on the plight of refugees in Malaysia and decided to spend a few months as a volunteer in Africa and wrote a book on this.Fairview IB Project 4At the end of the day, IB Education is about education for a better world. Children of Fairview are encouraged to make a positive difference in whatever they embark on be it our bi-annual expeditions or in a classroom learning.Unleashed the creativity within your child at Fairview International School.
