Question

We are from the UK and planning to relocate to KL for 2 years. Our soon to be 5 years old is currently in reception year in the UK. We are looking for a good school (year 1 and year 2) for him. Don’t have any preference in terms of location or international/ national school but our preference is to have English-based teaching with plenty of exposure to Mandarin language as well. Our aim for the next 2 years for him is to get as much exposure to Mandarin language (hopefully will be a fluent speaker), however still having a strong English foundation learning for him to be able to continue school in the UK in year 3. Any input will be appreciated. Thank you.

Answer

Hello there! Thank you for reaching out to schooladvisor.my Most international schools in Kuala Lumpur offer additional language such as Mandarin as part of the second language programme in the school. The classes are offered twice a week (most schools) with progressive assessments to gauge your son’s understanding and mastery of the language. These classes are taught by skillful and competent Mandarin speakers and so, your son is in capable hands. However, since the classes are only offered twice a week, it might not be enough to have your son be a fluent Mandarin speaker. My advice is to enroll your son in Mandarin enrichment classes that can help her develop his language skills further.

Some of the centres that you can look out for are;

1) Smart Mandarin Kids

2) YelaoShr®

This centre offers Mandarin courses for those who have limited Mandarin learning background.

Since you will be moving back to the UK after 2 years, it is advisable to choose a school that offers a UK-based curriculum. I suggest that you place your son in an international school instead of a national school mainly because of the curriculum system. It could be rather stressful for you as a parents and your son to deal with change in curriculum.

In Kuala Lumpur, we have 2 top featured schools that offers the British National curriculum and learning environment similar to the UK.

1) Alice Smith School http://schooladvisor.my/schools/the-alice-smith-school/
The Alice Smith School provides high quality British education for students age 3-17.

2) Garden International School http://schooladvisor.my/schools/garden-international-school/
Garden International School (GIS) is the largest private, co-educational, British international school in Malaysia

I hope this helps! Let me know if you need further assistance.
