Malaysian high school debate team wins championship in Thailand

The Malaysian debate contingent at the Asian World Schools Debating Championship (AWSDC) Bangkok, Thailand was champions after defeating the South African team on Monday night.

Proposing the motion “This House Believes that if leaders of capable states turn away refugees, the International Criminal Court should try them for crimes against humanity”, the team consists of Deborah Wong from SMK Damansara Jaya, Thevesh Thevanathan from Kolej Tuanku Ja'afar and Nishanth Selvalingam from the International School of Kuala Lumpur.

Thevesh was also announced as the overall best speaker of the competition with 40 teams from 9 different countries debating from the 31st of July to the 5th of August.

Part of the 12 speaker contingent that is funded by the Malaysian Institute for Debate & Public Speaking, the Malaysian debating contingent will be participating in the Worlds Schools Debating Championship (WSDC) in Bangkok from the 5th to the 15th of August 2014.
