Besides Terengganu, more hospitals in other states are also implementing the school-in-hospital project. The project was initiated by Deputy Prime Minister’s wife Puan Sri Noorainee Abdul Rahman through a Nurul Yaqeen Foundation initiative, Projek Hati Nurani, in collaboration with the Health and Education Ministries.Following the programme's pilot stage at Hospital Ampang, Hospital Kuala Lumpur’s Paediatric Institute and Hospital Serdang in 2011, there are now seven such schools in Johor, Selangor, Kelantan and Pahang. There are nine teachers and two support administrative staff in each school-in-hospital, catering to young patients at the pre-school, primary and secondary school levels.Besides English, Bahasa Malaysia, Science and Mathematics lessons, patient-students are also given time to be involved in recreational activities.

By mid-2013, another three school-in-hospitals are slated to open, said Noorainee.

The three new school-in-hospitals will be located at the Sultanah Fatimah Specialist Hospital in Johor, Sarawak General Hospital in Sarawak and Likas Women and Children’s Hospital in Sabah.“Hopefully, we will soon have at least one school-in-hospital in every state,” added Noorainee.A total of 16,839 children have benefited from the project, as of February.Related news
