SJIIM Celebrated International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) Scholars at Scholarship Awards Ceremony

St. Joseph’s Institution International School Malaysia (Tropicana PJ Campus) also known as SJIIM, recently held a Scholarship Awards Ceremony for its founding International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) Scholars at its school auditorium.

A time honored Lasallian tradition that is also observed in its brother school, SJI International Singapore, the ceremony honors its IBDP Scholars who were selected to receive the inaugural SJIIM IBDP Scholarship last year. The IBDP Scholarship Programme which is a cornerstone of the Lasallian International School, saw 28 deserving students receving the inaugural scholarship last year which consists of scholarship offers ranging from 100% - 20% in school fee waivers. Each of these scholars stood proud as they were called on stage to receive their Scholarship Award Certificates from the Scholarship Programme’s various generous sponsors while being feted by SJIIM’s Board of Governors, teachers, parents and students.

Mr. Dennis Tang who is the Chairman of the Scholarship Committee and one of Governors of SJIIM, thanked the sponsors of the scholarship fund for their generous contribution and communicated a strong message to the scholars receiving their awards, he said “The blessings of a scholarship comes with expectations. The expectations are beyond the grades that you will deliver but the person that you will become. A person who is able but more importantly available to the less fortunate. Have a mind that is connected to your heart. Treat your family, friends, colleagues and all around with love and kindness. Be honest and be a person of integrity and when faced with the tough choice of making the right or smart choice, you will choose to make the right choice.” He also thanked the parents for their trust in sending their children to SJIIM and the IBDP teachers for making the students’ learning experience a truly enriching one so far.

The SJIIM IBDP Scholarship Programme received a total of 55 applications last year and is supported by the generous contributions from well known foundations, corporations and benefactors such as the Tropicana Foundation which contributed RM 1.5 million to the scholarship fund, the Tan Sri Tan Foundation which contributed RM 1.2 million, Ranhill Corporation Berhad, Energy and Environmental Consulting Group Company Limited (Thailand) and Mr Lawrence Tham who contributed RM 140000 each besides funds from the SJIIM itself.

Ms. Yap Su-Yin, CEO of the Tan Chin Tuan Foundation and representative of the Tan Sri Tan Foundation together with Dato’ Richard Ong was pleased to have met the scholars they have helped sponsored together with their families. “As society pushes for excellence in every field, we recognise that education must be holistic, empowering and anchored in wholesome values. These qualities are apparent in the Lasallian brand of education. We are optimistic that the scholars, cultivated as they are by excellent teachers and mentors, will do their family, school, country and benefactors proud.” said Su-Yin.

Funds from these bodies helped kickstarted the scholarship programme and extended its reach further with successful applications from outside of the Klang Valley and Malaysia also receiving accommodation and allowance allocations to make their study in SJIIM more feasible and affordable.

An all-round enriching scholarship experience, the IBDP Scholars of this programme also had the opportunity to participate in a Lasallian Leadership Training Camp in the Philipines last year which focused on Lasallian Formation, Leadership Training and Service Work and helped prepare the school’s scholars as Senior Lasallian Student Leaders to serve the school’s community and the needy public on their return from the camp.

The SJIIM IBDP Scholarship Programme is a unique outreach initiative of St. Joseph’s Institution International School Malaysia. It offers a 2 year scholarship to pursue the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme in SJIIM. The scholarship will also provide full board and lodging together with some basic expenses allowance for students living outside the Klang Valley and Malaysia. Category of applications are divided into academic and means testing and all applicants are expected to be able to provide evidence of good academic performance and demonstrate active participation and leadership in co-curricular activities.
