Deputy Prime Minister, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has maintained that the Ujian Peperiksaan Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) is here to stay as the assessment serves as the benchmark from students after six years of primary schooling.

With some 400,000 students in 8,384 schools currently taking the UPSR exam, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin hopes that the assessment would help to produce better students with the capability of high order thinking skills that would be continued at the secondary level.

He went on to state that there are no plans to scrap the exam  as it is able to gauge a student’s learning experience at Primary School especially in the key subject areas.

Students currently taking the UPSR exam will advance to Form One in Secondary school regardless of the results but Tan Sri Muhyiddin has stated that it is important for parents to know which level their children are in based on the exam results.
