UPSR new format might be abolished

After this year’s results, UPSR’s new format is going through heavy criticism and may not survive next year.UPSR new format might be abolishedThe recent revelation that accompanied the results of the Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) sparks mixed emotions among Malaysians. The results have not been received well because of the level of performance and the percentage of students who got straight As this year.Unhappiness, anger and disappointment among parents and students are very much understandable. However, it essential to understand what all these feelings mean and how they reflect on future performance.The feeling of disappointment is overwhelming when students are used to getting As throughout the years preceding the new format. Once performance declines because of the format, this change will not be welcomed and there will be resistance.Those results exposed a massive problem within national schools. However, the problem is not a simple one.This year’s results left a degree of uncertainty about the future of UPSR. The Education Ministry is to undertake the tremendous effort of assessing the quality of UPSR.  They need to investigate it thoroughly. However, there are speculations over the possibility of abolishing UPSR and replacing with school-based assessment systems.The Education Minister Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid said that the ministry is studying the situation to determine if examination for Year Six should continue. “We will announce the decision next year if the UPSR is to be continued following the findings of the study,” he told reporters in the lobby of Parliament.The study involves examining education models in South Korea, Finland, and France as these models focus less on memorisation and examinations to assess performance.In these systems, students are evaluated based on a specific assessment system that takes into account the entire duration of studying in the years of primary education.In spite of the announcement of the new UPSR back in 2010, implementation took place this year.  There was a period of at least 5 years to prepare.
