The UEC or Unified Certificate Examination in Malaysia is only available for the secondary students of independent Chinese schools at the end of Senior Middle 3. The UEC-SML has examinations for mathematics, sciences (biology, chemistry and physics), bookkeeping, accounting, and commerce available in Chinese and English, while other non-language subjects are only available in Chinese. At the time this article was published, the Malaysian Ministry of Education is still debating whether or not to recognize the UEC. They had announced that UEC would be recognized only if local content was added in the history and geography lessons and for students to achieve at lease credit in BM. As a result, students who are UEC holders are not allowed entry into the local universities and have to seek private or overseas tertiary education. However, UEC graduates are still eligible for PTPTN loans and local teacher training colleges as long as they receive a pass in BM and achieve distinction in three other subjects.Dong Jiao Zong, a joint collective between the Chinese School Teachers and School Committees associations in Malaysia have been very vocal about the recognition of the UEC with mixed responses. It is undeniable that this would benefit students, parents and nation alike but no one has actually taken the time to explain why. We at SchoolAdvisor.my has compiled a list of reasons the UEC should be recognized by the Malaysian Government as soon as possible.
Most of the independent schools prepare their students for both UEC and SPM, resulting in classes that last until night time and highly-strung students. The recognition of UEC would eliminate the need for another examination for backup reasons and allow the students more time to enjoy their childhood.
Chinese schools are already seeing a spike in non-Chinese students and a less stressful school environment would further encourage citizens of other ethnicity to enroll. Universities would also benefit from being inclusive and a breeding ground of more tolerant citizens. The world is getting smaller and we need to catch up fast.
The brain drain's main culprit are students choosing to study overseas and stay there for work. Allowing UEC graduates the option of local universities would increase our means of preserving the best students within the country.
UEC students no longer have limited choices when it comes to continuing education after secondary school. The healthy collaboration provided by the different learning styles would in turn produce better quality workers in the public and private sectors.
