Jing Xuan Yap is no ordinary student. She’s a national fencer (currently ranked top 1 in Malaysia in the women's epee category). As a two-time SEA Games representative for fencing in 2017 and 2019, she has showcased her talent on a regional stage. What’s more, she earned a silver medal in the 20th ASEAN University Games in Ubon Ratchathani, Thailand.

Her path to success began in the familiar setting of a public school. However, at 14, her educational journey took a pivotal turn when she secured the prestigious British High Commissioner’s Full Scholarship to study at The British School of Kuala Lumpur (BSKL).

This scholarship changed her academic trajectory and shaped her into the confident and adaptable individual she is today.

Thriving in a Supportive Environment

Stepping into BSKL meant entering a world of small class sizes, passionate teachers and a diverse student body. The intimate learning environment, notably in elective subjects like drama and music, fostered close relationships with educators who went beyond mere instruction, becoming mentors and friends.

“The teachers were consistently supportive, each genuinely passionate about teaching and brimming with energy, which made the learning process immensely enjoyable,” Jing Xuan says. “Among them, my A-level chemistry teacher, Mr Dunkin, stood out as a true dynamo; his fun classroom experiments were always entertaining and something I look forward to.”

This supportive atmosphere encouraged exploration and critical thinking, preparing students for the rigours of higher education.

She shares, “Coming from a background in public schools, transitioning to BSKL where I didn’t know anyone was initially daunting. The school’s diverse cultural and geographic makeup left me uncertain about fitting in or even how to navigate such a new environment.”

Yet Jing Xuan took the leap and ran for House President – which she eventually won.

That taste of accomplishment outside of her comfort zone motivated her to keep challenging herself. The experience also instilled in her the courage and leadership skills that benefits her today.

Embracing the ‘try everything’ mindset, Jing Xuan participated in various sports clubs such as volleyball, swimming, touch rugby, football and more – all of which nurtured her adaptability and fostered new interests. “I eventually decided to stick with fencing, which has accompanied me for 14 years and counting.”

Studying A-Levels at BSKL

Jing Xuan describes the prestigious British High Commissioner’s Full Scholarship as a beacon of opportunity that illuminated her path. “The scholarship assessment comprised three stages: a personal statement, followed by English and maths tests, culminating in a face-to-face interview.”

This scholarship not only funded her Year 10 and 11 studies but extended its benevolence to cover her A-Level education, transforming a two-year scholarship into a four-year odyssey of learning and growth.

Jing Xuan was diligent during her A-Levels, tackling a challenging combination of Psychology, Mathematics and Chemistry. Like her experiences in Year 10 and Year 11, class sizes remained intimate, fostering a collaborative learning environment. In psychology, the class comprised only four students, allowing for active participation in discussions and a free exchange of ideas.

One of the most striking differences Jing Xuan observed upon transitioning from IGCSE to A-Levels was the shift in her teachers’ approach. They consistently treated students as young adults, emphasising personal responsibility and preparation for life beyond academics. “I deeply appreciate the approach as it significantly contributed to cultivating the discipline necessary to succeed in university and beyond.”

Beyond academic excellence, BSKL played a crucial role in Jing Xuan’s transition to higher education, particularly in her journey to Sunway University. While the university’s admission process focused on grades – which  Jing Xuan had – BSKL also played a crucial role in guiding her towards UK universities.

“The school offered significant assistance, guiding me through writing my personal statement and providing valuable career advice, including degree selection. Additionally, it organised sessions where alumni shared their university experiences, immensely benefiting aspiring students like me.”

Moreover, recognising the challenge of securing work shadowing opportunities for students without work experience, BSKL leveraged its network to provide valuable connections. This holistic approach empowered students to confidently navigate the complex world of university admissions.

Pursuing higher education at Sunway University

While unsure of her career path, Jing Xuan opted for a broad Accounting and Finance degree at Sunway University, recognising its practical value and diverse job opportunities. Already a national fencer since the age of 16, she secured a 75% scholarship for the three-year programme, leveraging her athletic prowess and academic ambitions.

Life at the university presented yet another adaptation, with online learning due to the pandemic creating unexpected free time. True to the proactive spirit cultivated at BSKL, Jing Xuan seized this opportunity, securing a graphic design internship.

“This initial leap led to another three internships in the finance industry, totalling four by the time I graduated. Juggling these opportunities alongside full-time studies, I maximised the flexibility offered by recorded lectures, often dedicating my nights and weekends to my studies.”

The Lasting Impact of an International School Experience

Reflecting on her journey, Jing Xuan acknowledges the significant role BSKL played in shaping her into a confident and adaptable individual. Starting at the school alone forced her to navigate unfamiliar situations, fostering self-reliance and the courage to explore new possibilities.

“I recently presented at one of the sessions with the company’s board and investment panel. Though admittedly nervous, I found solace in reminding myself that if I could do it as a high schooler at BSKL, why not now as an adult? This mindset has guided me, allowing me to handle professional challenges with greater confidence and composure.”

Today, Jing Xuan works as an Equity Research Associate at Kumpulan Wang Persaraan while being a fencing instructor on the side.

Words of Wisdom for Parents

From her own experience, Jing Xuan emphasises that public and international schools in Malaysia offer excellent opportunities. The choice depends on individual aspirations and career goals.

“Attending an international school like BSKL offers advantages, including access to experienced mentors who adeptly guide you through the university application process. Additionally, it provides exposure to a culturally diverse environment, akin to the ambience found in many universities in the UK or the US.”

However, highly regarded public schools followed by local universities can be equally fulfilling for local careers. She believes the key lies in understanding individual needs and choosing the environment that best fosters them.

“Incredibly, I had the opportunity to experience schooling in two such amazing environments, each with its distinct and irreplaceable qualities.”
