Nexus School Students

The IB Diploma Programme

The IB Diploma Programme is a Pre-University programme for students aged 16-19 and is highly respected by leading universities across the globe. The curriculum is made up of the DP core and six subject groups. The DP core has three elements and aims to broaden students’ educational experience and challenge them to apply their knowledge and skills. The three core elements are:

1. Theory of knowledge, in which students reflect on the nature of knowledge and on

how we know what we claim to know.

2. The extended essay, which is an independent, self-directed piece of research, finishing

with a 4,000-word paper.

3. Creativity, activity, service, (CAS) in which students complete a project related to

those three concepts.

Through this programme, schools are able to develop students who are excellent in breadth and depth of knowledge and will excel in traditional academic subjects. In addition, the students would also benefit from a personal sense as the programme teaches and nurtures the students to be independent thinkers, have self-management and workplace skills, an open mind, and a global outlook.

Nexus Classroom

What does Nexus offer in IBDP?

Nexus International School Malaysia offers the IB Diploma Programme in Years 12 and 13 and students doing the programme at Nexus can be assured of ample support from the teachers and the school.

The Nexus Way is a major component in the school. Comprising of four elements – Mindset, Relationship, Inclusion, and Innovation – the Nexus Way is integrated into the teaching and learning between teachers and students, which meshes well with the DP core as it develops the IB students’ talents, leadership skills, and their sense of responsibility. In school, IB students have access to facilities and equipment necessary for their course work. The IB Hub is a shared space between the IB teachers and students where they work closely and establish a strong teacher-student relationship, all of which contributing to the success of the students.

The positive results are very evident. In 2017, several Nexus IB students achieved above 40 points, which included the only Malaysian student to achieve a perfect score of 45 points.

Then in 2018, the positive results were maintained as the cohort achieved an average of 34 points (world average was 30 points) with seven students achieving 40 points and above.

Beyond the curriculum support and results, the teachers also provide tremendous support to the students in their university placements. Nexus organises numerous university talks each year; a total of 113 universities from 13 countries visited the school in the last academic year. Ultimately, the goal is to support the students and since 2012, many Nexus IB graduates have furthered their studies in universities such as University College London, University of British Columbia, Nanyang Technological University, Duke University, University of Melbourne, London School of Economics, and many more.
