A student-led initiative has raised RM43,500 to help conserve Malayan tigers, a critically endangered species.

This 13-student initiative, helmed by Sasha Philip, a Year 7 student at The British International School of Kuala Lumpur (BSKL), created the BSKL for Malayan Tigers group at the school in 2019. They raised awareness through activities, events, and fundraisers throughout the 2019/20 school year before the pandemic struck the country.

Sasha commented, “I couldn’t ignore the plight of the Malayan tiger. I wanted to do my part to save tigers…from extinction.”

The BSKL for Malayan Tigers held a student art competition where the winning entries were featured in a calendar sold as a fundraiser, which included a foreword written by YA Bhg Dr Siti Hasmah, the wife of former Malaysian Prime Minister YA Bhg Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad. The group also introduced BSKL’s first Tiger Day in January 2020, and created merchandise that was sold at the BSKL Christmas Bazaar and on BSKL’s Tiger Day.

The proceeds from the drive will be donated to three groups: Jabatan Perhilitan Semenanjung Malaysia, the Malayan Conservation Alliance for Tigers (MYCAT), and WWF Malaysia.

BSKL’s Head of Primary, Simon Sharp, said, “Sasha’s work showcases her deep personal care and activism for the plight of the Malayan tiger and it has been incredible to support and develop her work.

“This is exactly the type of project that shows two of our school’s values in the most impactful way: ‘Be Ambitious’ and ‘Be Kind’.”

Sasha took an interest in the Malayan tiger after a school research project. She said, “When we make the world a better place for tigers, we also make a better place for us.”
