Outstanding Performance on International Schools' Assessment for IB PYP and IB MYP (2021)

A leader in international education, the International Baccalaureate (IB) cultivates young people who are inquisitive, knowledgeable, confident, and caring. The IB programmes enabled school-aged students to take charge of their own learning and supported the development of future-ready skills that will enable them to thrive in a world that is undergoing rapid change. In the IB, they offer a continuum of international education for students aged 3 to 19 through four challenging and high quality educational programmes. The programmes offered are as follows: the Primary Years Programme (PYP), the Middle Years Programme (MYP), the Diploma Programme (DP), and the Career-related Programme. 

The reasons that IB’s programmes are different from other curricula are that they encourage critical thinking and questioning of presumptions in students of all ages and challenge assumptions; develop independently of government and national systems and incorporate quality practises from research and the IB’s global network of schools; encourage students of all ages to consider regional and international contexts; and develop multilingual students.

In the PYP, it offers an inquiry-based, transdisciplinary curriculum framework that fosters conceptual understanding and is a 3- to 12-year-old student-centred educational strategy. This reflects the top educational research, thought leadership, and experience acquired from IB World Schools. As the programme for students aged 11 to 16, the MYP is a challenging framework that encourages students to apply what they learn in the classroom to the real world. Students who complete the MYP are well-prepared to enrol in the DP and CP. 

The International Baccalaureate (IB) PYP and MYP student performance on the International Schools' Assessment (ISA) was compared with non-IB students from the same ISA cohorts in the study done by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER). The ISA, which covers reading, mathematical literacy, narrative writing, expository writing, and scientific literacy, was developed for students in international schools in grades 3 through 10. This study also examined how the results of grade 9 and 10 MYP students compared with Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) means. 

“Results showed that the PYP and MYP students outperformed students from non-IB schools in a number of grade levels in the ISA assessment areas” 

Furthermore, the MYP students’ ISA mean scores in all three domains (mathematical literacy, reading, and scientific literacy) were significantly higher than the PISA mean scores. Consistent with previous research (Tan and Bibby 2010; Tan and Bibby 2012), these results offer compelling evidence that PYP and MYP students in international schools perform well academically, even when measured against a group of students with similar academic achievements.
