About Deutsche Schule Kuala Lumpur (DSKL)

Deutsche Schule Kuala Lumpur (DSKL) is a German School Abroad supported by the Central Agency for Schools Abroad (ZfA) and operated by the German School Association Malaysia. The school provides an education based on the German education system and prepares students for German school-leaving qualifications, including the German International Abitur (DIA) .

The school welcomes children of different nationalities from Kindergarten onwards, provided they have sufficient German-language proficiency. Malaysian citizens require prior approval from the Malaysian Ministry of Education before admission.

DSKL has a distinctly international environment, with the school reporting 13 nationalities , bilingual teaching in selected subjects and opportunities for intercultural learning.

DSKL follows the German education system, with its curriculum based on:

Curriculum of the Federal State of Thuringia

Core curricula approved by the Standing Conference of Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs (KMK)

Standardised frameworks for German Schools Abroad in Asia

DSKL-specific curriculum elements

The curriculum incorporates Malaysian cultural, historical and social characteristics while maintaining a strong international orientation.

The full educational pathway comprises 12 school years , progressing from Primary School through the German International Abitur.

The Primary School covers Years 1–4 and is intentionally kept relatively small and family-oriented.

Students benefit from:

Open learning methods

Modern teaching materials

Cross-year projects

Individualised support

German-language development

English from Year 1

Mathematics support

Reading support

Enrichment and extension programmes

The school also has a specialist teacher for students requiring additional educational support and gifted students.

After Year 4, students enter a one-year Orientation Stage in Year 5.

The school deliberately delays formal academic streaming until later in the secondary pathway. This allows teachers to observe students' strengths and development before recommending the most suitable educational route.

Secondary education begins from Year 6.

Students are eventually streamed into three German school pathways:

Hauptschule

Realschule

Gymnasium

However, the school maintains a degree of flexibility between pathways. Strong-performing Realschule students who study French may still move into the Gymnasium pathway up to the end of Year 8.

Students can obtain:

Hauptschulabschluss

Realschulabschluss / O-Level equivalent

Qualification for progression to the upper secondary level
