About Labuan International School

Labuan International School (LIS) is a private international school in Kampung Tanjung Aru, Labuan, and describes itself as the first and only private international school in Labuan. It commenced operations in 1996 and moved to its current purpose-built campus in 2012 with support from Labuan FSA and the Ministry of Finance.

LIS provides families with a choice between an International Curriculum and the Malaysian National Curriculum. The school currently offers Reception, Primary and Secondary education, with the international pathway following a British/Cambridge curriculum leading to IGCSE.

The school's educational philosophy focuses on developing students in mind, body and soul, with particular emphasis on academic achievement, the arts, sports, creativity, critical thinking, confidence and independence.

Primary School

International Curriculum

LIS Primary follows a British Curriculum integrated with elements of the Singapore Curriculum, while some Malaysian national subjects are incorporated into the international pathway.

The programme covers:

  • Key Stage 1
  • Key Stage 2

The school aims to build strong academic foundations while developing communication, critical thinking and independent learning skills.

National Curriculum

For families choosing the Malaysian pathway, LIS also offers KSSR from Standard 1–6.

This provides a distinct alternative from the international-school pathway.

Secondary School

International Curriculum

The international secondary programme follows the British Curriculum. Students undertake Cambridge IGCSE from Year 10, with Cambridge Checkpoint available for Lower Secondary students.

The international secondary programme uses:

Cambridge International Curriculum → Cambridge Checkpoint → Cambridge IGCSE

The medium of instruction is English, except for Malay as a foreign language and Mandarin.

National Curriculum

LIS also offers KSSM for national-curriculum students, with pathways towards SPM. Mathematics and Science are taught in English in the school's national secondary programme.
