In order to encourage parents to be more involved in their children’s education, the Education Ministry is proposing the introduction of parenting courses. According to Schools Management Division Director Datuk Mazlan Mohamad, the ministry is looking at the possibility to organise such courses in partnership with other related ministries.

A toolkit has been developed by the ministry to guide parents on how to increase their involvement in schools and for schools to engage parents and the broader community. The toolkit is one of the Malaysia Education Blueprint 2013-2025 initiatives. The toolkits had been given out to all 10,019 schools nationwide.

Every school has received three sets of the toolkits and a CD. It’s up to school on how to disseminate the information, added Mazlan. A total of 700 parents from the parent-teacher associations have been trained on the toolkit. In 2013, the ministry will begin to measure data on parental involvement in schools.
