Six Malaysian maths whizzes made the country proud at the 2017 International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Malaysia managed to clinch the 37th spot in this year's IMO, allowing Malaysia to jump 20 spots up from a ranking of 57 in 2015 thanks to the efforts of local students Tan Li Xuan, Ivan Chan Kai Chin, Sean Ghee Zhing, Theam Wing Chun, Hanissa Shamsuddin and Yeoh Zi Song (not pictured).
The Math whizzes took home an impressive haul of two silver medals, two bronze medals, and two honourable mentions.
Organised by Instituto Nacional de Matemática Pura e Aplicada - a research institute and graduate school, under the Brazilian Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, the IMO is a prestigious math competition for secondary school students, attracting over 500 participants from over 100 countries.
Since its inception in 1959, the competition has provided a stimulus for mathematics, spurring creative exchange of ideas among students from various cultures. This marks the 23rd year that Malaysia is participating in the IMO.
