Teach for Malaysia programme pushes students towards attaining excellence

Teach for Malaysia (TFM), a non-profit organisation aimed at promoting education opportunities, has helped bring out students' potential by bringing the realities of the outside world into their classrooms.The organisation's initiative in providing the unique learning experience had helped push the students towards attaining excellence. "It is an opportunity which many of our students rarely have, said Bernama general manager Datuk Yong Soo Heong.

Yong said the involvement of distinguished personalities in the programme was seen as capable of booasting students' spirit to become useful individuals in the future. The personalities, including columnist Datin Paduka Marina Mahathir, international shoe designer Datuk Jimmy Choo, AirAsia chief executive officer Aireen Omar, entertainer Datin Seri Tiara Jacqueline and Media Prima Radio Networks chief executive officer Seelan Paul, are invited to talk in schools. 

TFM Taskforce chief Dr Ruhaya Hassan said the TFM programme, which focuses in leadership development activities, provides an eight-week course for every Fellow before they were assigned as teachers in schools with high requirement. Under the programme, the first cohort began in January 2012, comprises 47 Fellows teaching in 17 schools with high requirement in Kuala Lumpur, Negeri Sembilan and Selangor.In 2013, a total of 51 Fellows are teaching in 26 schools with high requirement in Kedah, Penang and Perak.Currently, TFM is seeking for additional 100 Fellows for its new cohort slated to start in 2014.
