5 national schools recognised as IB World Schools

International Baccalaureate World School (IB World School) recognition is awarded to 5 national schools across Malaysia placing the nation among top countries with IB syllabus.5 national schools recognised as IB World SchoolsBernama reports that the schools four day schools and one boarding school are in the states of Sarawak Perak, and Kedah and the federal territories Putrajaya and Labuan. The schools are Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Sungai Tapang, Samarahan in Sarawak, was recognised in March this year. It is the first SMK to hold the title. The Malay College Kuala Kangsar, Perak, an all-boys boarding school was recognised back in April. Followed by SMK Sultanah Bahiyah, Alor Setar, Kedah, and SMK Putrajaya Precinct 9 (2) in Putrajaya, both gained recognition in June. Finally, SMK Pantai, Labuan, was recognised in July.The Education Minister, Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid, said that these schools are among 28 national schools in five countries in Asia Pacific recognised as IB World Schools from Geneva, Switzerland. Other countries in the region include Australia with 16 schools, China with 5 schools, one school in each Hong Kong and Japan and now 5 in Malaysia.The programme has been successful in producing students and individuals with curiosity and knowledge, who are independent thinkers with critical thinking skills, soft skills and are risk takers.Government schools aim to produce quality graduates and compete with private and international school in terms of quality of education. The Minister said that his ministry is expecting 3 more schools to receive the title from the Swiss body sometime by the end of this year. Additionally, the Ministry is also aiming to have a total of 10 national schools with IB programmes.The schools expected to follow suit are Kolej Tunku Kurshiah, Negeri Sembilan, Sekolah Menengah Sains Tengku Muhammad Faris Petra, Kota Bharu, Kelantan, SMK Seri Tualang, Temerloh, SMK Dato’ Sheikh Ahmad, Arau, Perlis and SMK Agama Sheikh Abd Malek, Kuala Terengganu, Terengganu.
