Garden International School (GIS) is taking contextualising learning to the next level by using their Design Technology subject to show students the value of the subject in industry links that can highlight possible future career paths for them.

Students are required to produce a work that is directly linked to a real-life client at least once a year so they can hone their skills in dealing with companies who are collaborating with GIS such as Aquaria, WWF, SketchDrive, JW Marriot Hotels and Vagler.

Their designs will be assessed by real companies during monthly board metings and they will also be provided with professional advice and a chance to showcase their work. This will encourage students to be more effective at managing their time and meeting deadlines. Showcasing their work to the public will give them a boost of confidence and having them explain what they have done in person makes it even more special.

Some of the projects that GIS is currently involved in are pop-up reward cards designed for an Early Years Centre, design & make products to sell in a company gift shop with profits going to charity and also shop-window display designs. Johnno Ellison, their designer in residence also uses his expertise to help the students with their projects and make them understand the importance of Design Technology.
