Education director-general, Datuk Seri Dr Khair Mohamad Yusof has announced that starting from next year, schools will be conducting the Year 6 Aptitude Test within their own discretion.

Speaking at a media conference about the 2015 Ujian Penilaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) results, Khair further added that this year would be the last year the test would be conducted after UPSR. The Year 6 Aptitude Test aims to measure the level of mental capabilities and readiness of pupils before they enter secondary school.

The report would be based mostly on thinking and problem solving skills. It would also be used to determine the inclination of pupils towards their interest in academic, technical and vocational education. Khair further added "The test information is very useful to parents and teachers to assist pupils in making their choices in secondary education apart from enabling to realise the potential of pupils academically via their UPSR results."

Dates of the test would have to be determined by school managements starting next year.
