Terua's Journey in Finding a Second Home

For Terua Goto, leaving Japan to study at SISM was intimidating, but it turned out to be one of the best decisions of her life. “The teachers and students here made me feel welcome right from the start,” she shares. “Even when classes were tough, the support I received from my teachers and friends kept me going.”

Her day begins early at 5:00 am when she enjoys the quiet to focus on her studies before roll call. After her daily classes, Terua participates in extracurricular activities like dance and orchestra. These activities not only help her overcome language barriers but also allow her to connect with other students.

Adjusting to boarding life isn’t always easy for everyone. According to SISM Boarding Director Salil, some students initially struggle to settle in a new place. However, with regular check-ins, shared meals and support from the pastoral care team, they gradually feel at home. The faculty members encourage participation in enjoyable activities to help the students adapt and thrive in the new environment.

“Living on campus has taught me independence and resilience,” Terua shares. “But more than that, it has shown me the value of community.”

Jeannie’s Journey in Finding Purpose and Growth at SISM

For Jeannie Looi, SISM is a place where she’s found her voice. In addition to her daily classes, Jeannie thrives as the Female Boarding Coordinator in the SISM Student Council, where she works to create a more inclusive and connected community.

Her afternoons are packed with archery lessons and Student Council meetings. “I love how SISM encourages us to try new things,” she says. “It’s pushed me out of my comfort zone and helped me grow.”

One moment that changed her perspective forever in SISM was when the principal asked, “Why do you study?” Jeannie’s first thought was simple: “To be rich”. She then later realised that education is more than just about personal success. Inspired by her mother’s advice to find a career that brings both happiness and purpose, she embraced a new mindset. A quote she stumbled upon—"Do it alone. Do it uncertainly. Do it scared. Your life right now is someone else’s dream"—stayed with her and gave her the courage to view education as a way to make a difference.

“I study not just for myself but for others who don’t have the same opportunities,” Jeannie shares. “I want to become someone who can give back to the community that’s supported me.” For her, SISM is a place that pushes her to dream bigger and reach higher. It’s where she’s not just learning but becoming the best version of herself.

Counsellors like Lek Xin focus on creating a safe and supportive space for students. “The first and most important step is listening without judgment,” she explains. Through thoughtful activities like mindfulness sessions or just having a chat, they help students navigate challenges and build confidence in the new environment.

Teachers at SISM also bring a personal touch to their work. “I take the time to listen and understand each student’s needs.” shares Fei Jhue. It’s this care that makes students feel they belong and gives them the courage to take on challenges.
