AISM Malaysia takes a holistic approach to student well-being — from physical education and sport to emotional support and mindfulness. Here's how.

AISM's Approach to Well-Being: Raising Healthy, Balanced Students

Academic results matter. But so does the child behind them.

At Australian International School Malaysia (AISM), student well-being is not an afterthought — it's woven into the fabric of the school's daily life. AISM's philosophy is clear: healthy bodies nurture healthy minds. A child who feels physically strong, emotionally supported, and genuinely connected to their community is a child who is ready to learn.

Physical Education: A Core Part of Every School Day

Physical Education (PE) is a non-negotiable part of the AISM curriculum at every year level. All students participate in sport and physical activity as part of their regular timetable — not just as an optional extra.

AISM's PE programme is designed to:

  • Build physical fitness, coordination, and motor skills
  • Develop teamwork, sportsmanship, and competitive spirit
  • Instil lifelong habits around physical activity and health
  • Create opportunities for students to discover sports they genuinely love

Beyond the formal curriculum, AISM's extensive sports programme — with activities ranging from swimming to yoga to PADI diving — gives students every opportunity to stay active in ways that suit their personality and interests.

Swimming: Safety, Skill, and Community

AISM's 25-metre swimming pool is one of its most-used facilities. The school takes water safety seriously, with a structured swimming programme that begins with the very youngest students:

  • Foundation to Year 2 students participate in non-competitive water games, learning water familiarisation, balance, buoyancy, and the foundations of stroke development
  • Older students develop swimming competency, with some progressing to the Barracudas Swim Squad — one of the school's most popular co-curricular activities
  • The AISM Family Triathlon brings the whole school community — students and parents alike — together for a fun, non-threatening physical challenge

Emotional and Pastoral Support

AISM understands that academic pressure, social dynamics, and the challenges of adolescence can affect any child. The school has robust systems in place to support student mental and emotional health:

  • A full-time student counsellor is available during school hours to provide confidential support on mental and emotional health matters
  • The pastoral care structure in Middle and Senior School means every student has a dedicated point of contact who knows them individually and monitors their wellbeing
  • Mindfulness teaching is embedded into the ELC and Junior School curriculum, helping younger children develop self-awareness, emotional regulation, and focus from an early age

A Balanced Approach to Learning

AISM's 50/50 assessment model — half coursework, half external exams — is itself a well-being measure. It means students are not building toward a single high-stakes exam at the end of Year 12. Instead, their performance is recognised and rewarded throughout their school journey, reducing pressure and supporting consistent engagement.

This balanced approach, combined with smaller class sizes, means that no AISM student falls through the cracks. Teachers know their students, and students know they are known.

Learning Enrichment

For students with mild learning needs, AISM's Learning Enrichment team works alongside classroom teachers to provide additional support in literacy, numeracy, and social development. These teachers collaborate closely with families to ensure personalised strategies are in place for every child who needs them.

At AISM, every child's success is taken personally.
