Yesterday, caretaker Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak announced the approval for the construction of Foon Yew Independent High School's third campus.

The Chinese independent high school branch campus would be built on a 20-acre land donated by the developer in Seri Alam, Pasir Gudang.

Its main campus is situated in Stulang while its second campus, which was opened in 2003, is in the adjacent town of Kulai.

Unlike the other state capitals, there is only one Chinese independent high school in Johor Baru which is Foon Yew.

Caretaker Deputy Education Minister Wee Ka Siong said that the Chinese community in Johor Baru was in dire need of a new school.

“There are 70,000 students here, and Foon Yew alone has taken in more than 10,000, which is about 16% of the student population,” he said.

Foon Yew’s management committee vice chairman Tong Sing Chuan revealed that the idea to setup a new branch campus was mooted by the school authorities last December.

He said the new campus was expected to cost over RM40 million and he believed the community here would be glad to raise funds to build it.

Foon Yew High School, which would be celebrating its centenary this year, is the largest Chinese independent high school in Malaysia.
