About The British International School Kuala Lumpur (BSKL)

Founded in 2009, The British International School of Kuala Lumpur (BSKL) is a warm and welcoming international community. Our commitment to nurturing student happiness forms the foundation of student success and our ‘be ambitious’ philosophy.

The British International School of Kuala Lumpur offers an early years programme featuring play-based learning for children as young as 2 and continues with primary school and secondary school programmes culminating with A-Levels in Year 13. Students from more than 60 nationalities learn, collaborate and build together; making the school community authentically international.

Located in a leafy suburban campus in Petaling Jaya, British International School Kuala Lumpur places students at the heart of everything we do, including a personalised learning programme that allows teachers to challenge students to grow while assessing them against their own past performance. This ensures that all students experience growth, are open to trying new opportunities and will be invested in their learning and success.

The British International School Kuala Lumpur (BSKL) is proud to be part of the Nord Anglia Education (NAE) family, the world’s leading premium schools organisation with 78 international schools located in 31 countries around the world.

Being part of the NAE network allows BSKL to continue to strengthen its academic credentials and enhance learning through a number of key initiatives. Including the Global Campus which connects nearly 70,000 students around the world, and a large programme of events and expeditions in Southeast Asia and beyond. Allowing students to explore the world, learn new skills and set their sights higher; developing a truly international perspective through outstanding online, in-school and worldwide experiences. BSKL students also benefit from collaborations with the world’s best organisations including MIT, Juilliard and UNICEF.

BSKL is also accredited by the Council of British International Schools (COBIS),  Federation of British International Schools in Asia (FOBISIA) and is approved by the Malaysian Ministry of Education. BSKL is also an accredited examination centre for the University of Cambridge examinations and Edexcel’s GCSE and A-Levels examinations.

The British International School Kuala Lumpur (BSKL) teaches 1,100 students from Early Years through to Sixth Form following the English National Curriculum which is organised into blocks of years called ‘Key Stages’ (KS).

The Foundation Stage starts in the Early Years (ages 2 to 5), where learning is play-based. Children acquire their first notions of numeracy and literacy through active, playful activities. By the end of the Early Years, most children have acquired basic reading and number skills and a grounding of a second language.

In Primary school, KS 1 (ages 5 to 7) and KS 2 (ages 7 to 11) focus on learning good fundamental Maths and English language skills. Science, Technology, Humanities and Art are covered as multidisciplinary topics and through projects.

The curriculum in KS 3 Lower Secondary (ages 11 to 14) is more subject-based and aims at building students’ ability to work independently and think critically. At this stage, the emphasis is on exposing opportunities to a wide range of subjects so that they can begin to form ideas of where their academic interests lie.

Upper Secondary students in KS 4 work towards their IGCSE examinations (ages 14 to 16). At IGCSE, students study English, Maths, Science and a second language plus an additional four or five subjects from a selection. In Sixth Form (ages 17 to 18) our A-level students specialise further and choose three or four subjects from a range of pre-university options.

BSKL students achieve excellent exam results, scoring well above the UK independent school averages and among the best in Malaysia. In the 2021 A-Level series:

  • 86% of A-Level students achieved A*/A grades
  • 92% A*/A/B grades in all of their A-level examinations

Our IGCSE students also earned top marks:

  • 81% earned A*/A grades
  • 94% A*/A/B grades in all their IGCSE examinations.
  • 17% of BSKL students earned all A* (or equivalent) grades.

We believe the strength of the school relies on people. This is why we recruit and retain the best teachers in the world, committed to nurturing and inspiring every child. At BSKL, 100% of teachers hold international teaching qualifications from well-regarded institutions and all assistant teachers in Years 1 - 6 hold degrees with three years of working experience in a relevant field. The school’s small class sizes keep learning focused on the student. All classes from Year 1 to Year 6 have both a classroom teacher and an assistant teacher. The teaching team benefits from extensive and unique professional development opportunities, ensuring students benefit from contemporary educational thinking and practices.
