All of a parent's greatest concerns can be distilled into three questions:

1."Can I believe you?"

All parents want to be able to trust the teachers they are sending their kids to.

2."Are you acting in the best interests of my child?"

Parents need to know that it's all about the child's best interests, NOT the teacher's.

3."Do you know what you are talking about?"

Parents need to be assured that the teacher has done their research about their students.

Teachers need to earn the trust of parents before any real progress can be made in the classroom.

In addition, here are a few questions a parent might use to gauge the responsiveness and trustworthiness of a teacher:

  1. Has she clearly communicated expectations for behavior and modeled those expectations for students?
  2. Is he available for before or after-school assistance?
  3. Does she partner with other teachers who share the same students?
  4. Does he share good news, not just bad news?
  5. Is she responsive to your emails, voice mails, or written notes?
  6. Has he invited you to spend time in your child's classroom or to participate in other ways?

Reflect on these questions the next time you have meet your kid's teacher. It'll aid in gauging the school's suitability to your child.
