Schooladvisor TeamThe International Baccalaureate Diploma Program is a rigorous two-year curriculum culminating in exams in six subjects (three higher level and three standard level).
The Diploma Programme prepares students for effective participation in a rapidly evolving and increasingly global society as they:
• Develop physically, intellectually, emotionally and ethically
• Acquire breadth and depth of knowledge and understanding, studying courses from 6 subject groups
• Develop the skills and a positive attitude toward learning that will prepare them for higher education
• Study at least two languages and increase understanding of cultures, including their own
• Make connections across traditional academic disciplines and explore the nature of knowledge through the programme’s unique theory of knowledge course
• Undertake in-depth research into an area of interest through the lens of one or more academic disciplines in the extended essay
• Enhance their personal and interpersonal development through creativity, action and service
The IB Diploma provides an opportunity to study several subject areas in depth as well as focusing on personal development alongside academic study. This can be attractive to pupils who find it hard to choose only three or four A-level subjects and who don’t want to specialise too early.
Delaying specialisation means there are more degree options available for longer, if your child isn’t sure about what they want to study at university – which many 17-year-olds aren’t!
The disadvantage of the IB is that it is a demanding workload and some pupils will have to work very hard to maintain and achieve good grades across each subject area if they have strengths and weaknesses. It may be best suited to highly-able ‘all rounders’.
• Acceptance Rates: Graduates of International Baccalaureate Diploma Program have a higher university and college acceptance rates than other applicants.
• Increased Opportunities: Graduates have increased opportunities of being granted scholarships and grant opportunities.
• Interdisciplinary Teaching: This method of instruction develops the students into international-minded individuals.
• Unlimited Knowledge: Being a graduate of this institution means cultivation of lifelong learning.
• Teacher Development: Unlike other schools where teacher evaluation has always been an issue, International Baccalaureate Organization develops its teachers to meet up the demands of the students using IB strategies.
• Risk Takers: The students are trained not to be afraid of approaching unfamiliar situations and uncertainties. They are taught to be independent-spirited, be able to explore new strategies, ideas and roles, to be expressive and able to defend their beliefs.
• Knowledgeable: The institution trains its students to be able to explore concepts and issues that have both local and global significance which will in turn, help them to acquire in-depth knowledge and understanding of various disciplines.
• Liberal Minded: The graduates of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program understand and appreciate their own personal histories, are open to the perception, values and traditions of other people. They confidently seek and evaluate a variety of perceptions and tend to grow from the experience gained therein.
• Highly Principled: Graduates of International Baccalaureate Diploma Program grow up to be principled individuals who act with integrity and honesty, coupled with an astonishing sense of fairness and respect for other individuals, groups and even communities.
• Ingenuity: Its graduates are known to be creative and imaginative in dealing with everyday problems and dilemmas.
• Understanding: Graduates of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program are trained to project themselves into another person’s situation in order to understand that particular person’s reasoning and emotions over a given condition.
• Self-Assurance: Graduates pride themselves with being confident in their respective abilities as learners, and do not shy away from taking risks where necessary and at the same time, applying whatever they learn from the risk taken and applying them to their everyday life.
